Iona Cheval Mirror by Pinch design

Pinch design is a studio from London which recently came up with a stylish mirror design called Iona Cheval. Here is a short description from the designers: “The Iona Cheval mirror is a full-length elliptical mirror framed in solid oak with a shaker-style joint and brass rivet detail at one side. The solid oak A-frame is finished in a matt white oil, allows the mirror to pivot, and supports an off-white lacquered drawer section, whose top doubles as a compact low dressing table“.

Although not a traditional vanity set, the Iona Cheval Mirror does share some similarities that make it more that than a basic looking glass. A large, full-length mirror, it has a clean and contemporary look that makes it perfect for just about any bedroom. We truly appreciate its feminine appearance, making it suitable for ladies’ bedrooms. Delicate and refined, the Iona Cheval mirror can easily be integrated in a variety of contemporary interiors, but works with traditional ones as well. We are curious to find out your honest opinions about this simple, yet intriguing mirror design.

Founded in 2004, Pinch is the collaboration between husband and wife team Russell Pinch and Oona Bannon.  Working from the studio /showroom in London they aim to create graceful and iconic furniture and lighting that work for both elegant domestic spaces and stylish contract environments. With a timeless quality, their pieces are designed and built to last, and they hope work comfortably in a variety of situations, from concrete to country. Their style does not seek to dominate or dictate but they hope instead thoroughly and resonantly engages.

Eliz Lamp by Stal Collectief

Belgium-based Stal Collectief, gathering four young furniture designers, created a modern lamp that can fit quite a few things under its umbrella. The Eliz Lamp, as it was named, features an elegant, contemporary base that supports the sophisticated lampshade that seems to float above it. The contrast formed between the long, thin base and the felt lampshade gives this adjustable lamp a modern character. The comfortable light spread by the lamp is suited for residential spaces, restaurants, waiting rooms, office corners or even as an event light.

The frame is constructed out of birch plywood and the thin base is made out of metal. Elegantly floating above the base is the synthetic felt lampshade that can be replaced by veneer or Plexiglass if you want to use it outdoors. Versatile and modern, the Eliz Lamp will guide you with its light and enchant you with its contemporary shape and choice of materials.

Stal is a collaboration between four young furniture designers who studied in Mechelen: Len de Paepe, Bob Segers, Tim Vranken and Jonas Blondeel. The lamp “Eliz” forms a contrast between the elegant base and the large felt hood that seems to float above it. This adjustable lamp creates an intimate space and ensures a pleasant light zone and can be used in living room, waiting rooms, restaurants or as event furniture. The frame structure consists of birch plywood and is supported by a thin metal base. The synthetic felt can be replaced by veneer or a plexiglass cover for outdoor use.

This next description is from Paul Templeman-Holmes, Director of Branding and Business Development: “With the Maison et Objets in Paris as its dramatic back-drop Baltus launched its sleek and elegant introductions for 2011. Items like the Totem table reflect designer Javier Martin’s ongoing affinity for the principles of Asian design while more asymmetric offerings such as the Aura side table and Motion coffee table have a presence reminiscent of the neo-plasticist works of Piet Mondrian. Vibrant new color offerings such as red and sky blue punctuate the new Esferas collection and help keep Baltus acutely on trend with pieces as fashionable and sophisticated as Paris herself.”

Decorex International 2011

Furniture and lighting designers including Russel Pinch (on the picture), La Dune and Diffuse will exhibit prototypes at trade show Decorex International in London from 25 to 28 September 2011. The show takes place annually and showcases a hand-picked selection of products for interiors.

It could be argued that a prototype is in effect a sort of bespoke item – with each shape and form carefully drawn by hand, then designed and refined using a CAD programme, which is then physically created in whatever material to achieve a finished article; at which point the factory will use this as a template to work from to the designers specifications and materials to create multiples.

However, leaving the factory part to one side, this is exactly the process that any bespoke designer will go through to create their one-off pieces – only that the ‘prototype’ will be the finished article. Time, labor, materials and the finish are just some of the features that sets a bespoke piece apart.

In an era of mass production, the opportunity and demand to create individual pieces or designs has never been greater. Pinch Designs is one such company that creates hand-made pieces in the UK to order, thus providing a flexibility that’s just not possible in a mass production route. While Fromental, the wallpaper specialists, offer what they consider to be called ‘couture for clients walls’, providing hand-painted and embroidered wallpapers to commission. Diffuse porcelain lighting will create statement lighting pieces, according to the size and proportion of any space, a service that runs alongside their standard collections. Even Ben Whistler who have established a reputation for their hand-made furniture, can either customize their standard pieces of furniture to fit in with a designer’s plan, whether by using different dimensions, seating comfort, wood stains or finishes, or can create unique, one-off pieces.

With bespoke, the design possibilities are endless, whatever the shape or form, and a show like Decorex highlights this.

Coiling Collection from Raw Edges

London-based designers from Raw Edges have created these amazing pieces of furniture made from 326 metres of coiled felt. Each of the items that create the furniture collection has coiled felt soaked in silicone that create the rigid shape. Constructed on a wooden structure, the stools, chairs and table look like art works. Each of them has different colors, as if they wanted to accentuate their spontaneity and artistic shape.

Long strip of felt is coiled and formed into a three dimensional body. One side of the felt is being left in its natural softness, where the other side is saturated with silicon. The felt absorbs the silicon into its fibres and together they set into a hybrid material with structural build. The principle has been inspired by composite materials, a combination between bonding and structural materials, similar to reinforce concrete or the ancient cob set from mud and straw.

This official collaboration between Yael Mer & Shay Alkalay started after many years of sharing life, thoughts, ideas and everything in-between. Designers Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay share a common goal – to create unique and limited-edition designs objects: “Yael’s main focus includes turning two-dimensional sheet materials into curvaceous functional forms, whereas Shay is fascinated by how things move, function and react.” Their works have been exhibited at Johnson Trading Gallery in New York, FAT Galerie in Paris, Scope Art Fair in Basel and Rossana Orlandi Milan. Their designs can be found within the permanent collection of the MoMA New-York and The Design Museum London, and in production with Cappellini, Established & Sons and Arco. In addition, Yael & Shay produce unique and limited-edition designs within their own studio in London. Their work has been featured in many major design publications and newspapers worldwide.
